Pathways
In any program, it is essential that residents can tailor their curriculum to match their individual learning style and professional goals. The second way for residents to do this is by selecting which “pathway” to participate in during their residency.
Any resident can participate in any of our pathways. Residents are offered the opportunity to do a “deep dive” into a pathway and be awarded a certificate at the end of training, or they can choose to “dabble” in one or more pathways and choose a few experiences that interest them.

Global Health Residency Pathway
This pathway provides an opportunity for residents to focus part of their residency education on developing knowledge and skills in global health through didactic teaching, experiential learning and faculty mentorship. Participants learn how to care for children living in low-income countries as well as the diverse immigrant population here in Washington, D.C.
JLW Leadership
This pathway is a brand-new program created to address identified knowledge and skill gaps for residents interested in pursuing a role of leadership within academic pediatrics. Participants identify a mentor and become involved in leadership opportunities within the institution and at the national level.
Medical Education
This pathway allows residents to work with faculty to develop a tailored experience in adult learning theory principles in medical education. Participants design, implement and present a curriculum or scholarly project and reflect on opportunities for involvement in medical education as part of their future careers.
Policy, Education and Advocacy for Kids (PEAK)
This pathway consists of a variety of activities aimed at helping residents achieve goals and develop hands-on skills specific to a career involving health policy and advocacy. Participants create an advocacy portfolio, a tool to document their advocacy work and accomplishments.
Ultrasound
This pathway offers a structured, longitudinal curriculum combining online learning, hands-on scanning and dedicated elective time in the PICU to build skills in point-of-care ultrasound. Graduates receive a certificate and are expected to demonstrate proficiency in ultrasound principles, clinical applications and performance of key diagnostic and procedural scans.
