A neck mass is a enlarged abnormal formation or bump on a child's neck. These masses are mostly benign but on rare occasions be cancerous.

The most common symptoms of neck masses are:

  • May appear with an upper respiratory infection
  • Masses may become enlarged and painful

  • Careful visualization and palpation (feeling with the fingers) of the child's neck
  • Identification of specific location of the mass
  • Check for movement of the neck and the mass
  • Observe mass for swelling, redness, warmth, tenderness, drainage or fluid in the mass that could indicate infection

Treatment of neck masses will vary depending on the type of mass and whether there is an infection. A child's pediatrician may recommend the following:

  • Surgical removal of the mass
  • Antibiotics for infection
