What You Need to Know

COVID-19 is a disease caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2.

Key Symptoms

Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms, but some people become severely ill.

Characteristics

COVID-19 is spread in three main ways: Breathing in air, small droplets and particles and touching eyes, nose or mouth with hands that have the virus on them.

Prevention and Treatments

The COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States are Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax. The FDA approved the COVID-19 treatment Veklury (remdesivir) for pediatric patients. Additionally, an oral medication called Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir and ritonavir) is authorized for outpatient treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in children 12 years of age and older who are at increased risk of progression to severe COVID-19 disease.
