The academic program consists of bedside teaching, formal educational sessions, division and hospital-wide conferences and faculty development seminars. Fellows attend the CNH Fellows College, an institution-wide monthly seminar focused on medical education, research skills, quality improvement and leadership. This series is geared toward subspecialty fellows at Children’s National and is taught by faculty members within and outside of the division, many of whom have completed the Master Teacher Leadership Development Program at the George Washington University. Hospital Medicine Division conferences occur on a monthly basis and consist of journal club, morbidity and mortality conference, board review and clinical case conference. There are a multitude of faculty development and research conferences that occur throughout the year for all faculty in our division, which fellows are encouraged to take part in. Fellows are expected to contribute to division conferences and play a major teaching role while on the inpatient service. On a regular basis, faculty members observe the fellow’s teaching activities and provide feedback.

The majority of clinical training occurs at the Sheikh Zayed Main Campus of Children’s National. On the inpatient hospital medicine service, the fellow will lead a multidisciplinary team in the evidence-based evaluation and management of children with both single and complex medical problems. Additional clinical training occurs at Virginia Hospital Center, an affiliated community hospital. Here, the fellow will focus on care of the newborn, delivery room skills and management of pediatric inpatients in a community setting. The fellow will gain skills in the evaluation and management of the severely ill or injured child, airway management, pain management and surgical co-management by participating in rotations through the pediatric intensive care unit and emergency department. Elective clinical time is available for other rotations based on the fellow’s individual learning goals. Individualized curriculum time can be focused in a specific domain as desired by the trainee in the form of pathways. We currently offer formalized pathways in medical education, quality improvement, complex care, advocacy, community hospital leadership, bioinformatics and clinical research.

Pediatric Hospital Medicine Block Diagram

Over the course of the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship, the fellow is expected to formulate a research question relevant to pediatric hospital medicine, design and implement a research study and analyze the results. The fellow is expected to present the findings at a regional or national meeting and compose their findings in the form of a final manuscript. Research fundamentals will be taught at the monthly fellows’ conference. More advanced information and skills may be attained through completion of graduate coursework.

Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to complete a quality improvement project during their fellowship training through a longitudinal quality improvement educational curriculum that is composed of live workshops and online modules.

Fellows benefit from strong research infrastructure at Children’s National Hospital, through the Center for Clinical and Translational Research, Sheikh Zayed Institute for Surgical Innovation, the Bear Institute, Children’s Research Institute and Child Health Advocacy Institute. In addition, we are geographically adjacent to the National Institutes of Health and new Innovation Campus. Members of our division enjoy collaboration as investigators with all of these centers/institutes, providing our fellows with a variety of research opportunities, as well as guidance and mentorship.

Meet the Committee
