Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Fellowship
The Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Fellowship is a one-year advanced fellowship based at Children’s National Hospital, the capital’s only free-standing standing hospital with a dedicated state-of-the-art pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (CICU). We care for a wide range of medical and surgical cardiac critical care patients, from premature infants to adults with acquired and congenital heart disease, in our 26-bed CICU. Our Division of Cardiac Surgery performs more than 400 surgeries per year, encompassing all types of cardiac palliations and repairs, including mechanical assist devices and heart transplants.
Our fellowship has two positions each year for applicants who have successfully completed training in pediatric critical care, pediatric cardiology, pediatric anesthesia or pediatric neonatology. We offer a rigorous CICU curriculum with individualized training tailored to our fellow's background.
Fellows will train with outstanding pediatric cardiac intensivists with a diverse background in pediatric cardiology, pediatric critical care, pediatric anesthesia, pediatric pulmonology, simulation and telemedicine. Our goal is to train and foster the next generation of excellent pediatric cardiac intensivists and leaders in the field.
Rotations
All fellows:
- CICU: 24 weeks
- Cardiac Anesthesia/Cardiac Surgery/Perfusion: 2-6 weeks
- Research/Elective: 6 weeks
- Vacation: 4 weeks
Individualized Rotations for Critical Care/Anesthesia/Neonatology-trained Fellows:
- Cardiac Echocardiogram: 8 weeks
- Cardiac Catheterization: 4 weeks
- Electrophysiology: 4 weeks
Individualized Rotations for Cardiology-trained Fellows:
- PICU: 12 weeks
