Children’s National Hospital, based in Washington, D.C., celebrated 150 years of pediatric care, research and commitment to community.

Our hospital is renowned for its institutes and care centers, including the Children's National Heart Center, Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, Joseph E. Robert, Jr., Center for Surgical Care, Rare Disease Institute, Neuroscience and Behavioral Medicine Center, Center for Hospital-Based Specialties and the Diana L. and Stephen A. Goldberg Center for Community Pediatric Health.

Our pediatric academic health system offers expert care through a convenient, community-based primary care network and specialty care locations in the D.C., metropolitan area, including the Maryland and Northern Virginia suburbs. In addition, we partner with regional hospitals throughout the area to provide neonatal, cardiac and other types of specialty care. 

This institute is the academic arm of Children's National, encompassing the translational, clinical and community research efforts of the organization. Researchers conduct and promote translational and clinical medical research programs that lead to improved understanding, prevention, treatment and care of childhood diseases. The institute is located at our new Research & Innovation Campus on a nearly 12-acre portion of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center campus.

In 2019, the HSC Health Care System became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Children's National. The system serves people with complex healthcare needs and eliminates barriers to health services. In 2024 its specialty hospital and therapy centers were renamed Children’s National Rehabilitation & Specialized Care. The health plan continues under the name Healthcare Services for Children with Special Needs.

The Children’s National Hospital Foundation is the fundraising arm for Children’s National. It supports doctors, nurses, clinicians and staff who are advancing pediatric medicine through expertise, innovation and excellence in care and research. It works with individual donors, corporations and community organizations that share our dedication to improving the health of children. The Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization exclusively dedicated to Children’s National with a gold rating from Guidestar, the nation’s premier directory of nonprofits.

Through global education, research, media, community outreach and public policy efforts, Safe Kids reaches millions of children and their families with proven, practical and lifesaving interventions. It seeks to reduce injuries from motor vehicles, sports, drowning, falls, burns and poisonings. Since its founding in 1988, Safe Kids has helped reduce the U.S. childhood death rate from unintentional injury by 61 percent.

This program is a partnership between the District of Columbia's Department of Health and Children's National, whereby specialized, dedicated school nurses are placed in 110 D.C. public schools and 68 public charter schools. It advances the health and well-being, academic success and life-long achievement of students in the District of Columbia.
